The late night musings of this blog post are brought to you by Van Halen and the makers of pure, scrumptious rock ‘n roll. This entry is dedicated to businesses and the people who JUMP into projects, take action, roll with the punches and get to what’s real. May it inspire others to do the same.

Are you thinking about trying new marketing strategies to help move your business forward? Go ahead and Jump!

Seriously, do not let yourself become unable to make a marketing decision due to the volume of information available on this subject. Do not let yourself sit idle in order to process the information at the risk of taking an unnecessarily long time for a decision to be made. When it comes to marketing, there is definitely a delicate balance between being “methodical” and doing what is “instinctively the right thing” to do. I’ve heard people say, “If you don’t know what to do, do nothing.” I would rather listen to the screeching sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. If you are reading this blog post and like me, it is probably the same for you too. Do nothing? I don’t think so.

Sometimes…with the right guidance, the perfect business scenario, perfect strategy, is to shoot from the hip, ask questions later. If you know intrinsically what the HELL is going on, then YOU know WHAT’s WHAT. Talk about results…after the fact…not “tactics” before the simple execution of those strategic marketing efforts which your marketing person should instinctively know. Some shit cannot be taught, it is just known. Just sayin.

I’ve always been a person who is more inclined to leap before I look. That’s how I find myself in the right place at the right time in many business situations, and that’s how I often wind up front and center at many other social functions. Nadra Angerman's Photo Album

More information that is not immediately transparent…

THIS photo (above) is from my old school photo album titled Nadra Angerman Does Not Dance With Ugly Men Volume II. It was taken in the 90s during a Scorpions and Mötley Crüe rock concert in Nampa, Idaho. BEFORE the days of MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, cheap digital camera phones and anything else that might incriminate the “happy go lucky.” Um ya, this is my highly-coveted photograph of the one and only Vince Neil. It was taken by “yours truly” as I was sitting on the shoulders of the skinny, shirtless white guy in the front row with my disposable camera that had managed to survive a white water rafting trip along class 5 rapids on the mighty, mighty Salmon River two days prior. That was of course, right before the front-row guy catapulted me over the security guards up onto stage where I took the picture of the crowd (note starburst against black sky). Yup, that was me on stage facing the crow. You ready had to have been there to understand. It’s safe to say I can never run for public office. I digress… anyway.

The point is, I jump in BEFORE reading all of the directions, roll up my sleeves and GET TO WORK. I work hard and play hard. I do what MOVES ME for my CLIENTS. In terms of marketing strategy and tactics, I do what I know, instinctively, is the BEST for my clientele. That’s how I roll. Actually, that’s how I Rock N Roll. I jump right in.

What I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY HATE more than the DEVIL himself is what I call “analysis paralysis.” (BTW, if you clicked on the “Devil” link, God Bless David Lee Roth and his personal trainer). Back to analysis paralysis… Are you REALLY going to stop and evaluate that your arm is on fire??? Or are you simply going to stop, drop and roll… if nothing else, submerge yourself in a bathtub of water. My vote: Rock N Roll.

Okay, so I love marketing and I love Rock N Roll. This is what I’m talking about here: I’m talking about putting another dime in the jukebox baby…jumping in, leaping before looking, and oh yeah avoiding Analysis Paralysis at all costs!

That’s RIGHT: Avoid Analysis Paralysis

Especially when it comes to marketing, avoid analysis paralysis at all costs. What exactly is analysis paralysis, you say? It’s a phrase that I use to describe situations where the opportunity cost of decision analysis exceeds the benefits that could be gained by enacting some decision. It can also be described as informal situation where the sheer quantity of analysis overwhelms the decision making process…to the point where people do nothing, or miss opportunities by not seizing the moment. Avoid I’m gonna say it again, avoid analysis paralysis at all costs. ESPECIALLY IN THIS ECONOMY.

Do you need a marketing pro who is going to talk strategy and tactics all day long, ah HELL NO! You need a marketing pro whose work is going to speak for itself and come at your competitors like a hurricane. You want them to be thunderstruck. Call me HOWARD STERN of marketing, call me what you will. A spade is a spade, a porn star ia a porn star, a rock star is rock star… a true marketing pro is a rock star too.

Lot’s of marketing peeps talk a BIG talk about strategy, methods, ROI, deliverables. Those I say, will naturally present themselves after the hard work is done. Who has time, in this economy, to sit around and banter about what is wrong and what is right about your marketing strategy. Again, if YOU are a CEO of a million or billion dollar company…YOU KNOW exactly what I am talking about. Your marketing people get it or they don’t.

Most marketing professionals, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY ENTREPRENEURS, instinctively know the answer. Let’s promote your business, products and services. JUMP!

DISCLAIMER: Smoking kills, heroin kills, meth kills, any other concoction of depressants “slash” stimulants will kill you, AND if you are Catholic or Mormon watching porn stars in and rock videos may make your dick fall off. But you already knew that, right?! Are there any other questions? Ha, ha, ahhhh! ;) God bless 80′s rock.

One Response to “Jump Into Marketing and Move Your Business Forward”

  1. AJ Sweatt Says:

What a fun read, but it brings up a topic that’s awfully relevant these days – the balance between tactics & strategies. Your point is well taken (and did I mention fun?) and I’ve seen so many cats that use strategies to postpone jumpin’ in. Yep, it frustrates me too.

But what also chaps my oysters is when businesses don’t assess what’ll work for them before they try it – it’s not so much developing a strategy as it is a plan of attack. For instance, many of my clients are small businesses in the industrial/manufacturing space. Their engagement in social media ought to be thought through, because most of their customers aren’t using – or are restricted from using – those channels. What’s usually needed is some thought and observance to see who’s using what, and what they’re actually using it for. It’s a much different game for these folks than it is for consumer markets.

So, I think there’s some balance. But if I tilt a bit toward one side, I lean toward jumping. With a little thinking, too.
